Is it unsafe for a 20 year old female to travel and stay in hostels?

Im only 18 now but i was thinking when im about 20 i think it would be a good time to travel the world, amsterdam, ireland, australia california hawaii i was wondering if its okay to travel alone when your 20 and female. Is it safe? i would go with someone but i feel like i would get to do what I want to do more if i was alone. Is it safe to stay in hostels and “backpack”? or would i be better in hotels? or should i definately go with someone else?..maybe my brother?

    There was a beautiful young Australian girl who was murdered in Europe about 6 weeks ago, She was an Intelligent fun loving individual.
    It was a tragedy that I do not wish to see repeated.

    In 2005, when I was 20 I traveled throughout Europe (13 countries) by myself. I backpacked and stayed in hostels, and I was fine. I never felt threatened or nervous about traveling by myself either. Fact is, you meet new people who are traveling and doing the same thing you’re doing… so you end up hanging out with people you click with and you aren’t alone that often. And, yes… I’m a female.

    I live in California and I would say that some of it is ok to do by yourself. I would stay out of some icky neighborhoods in Los Angeles and the like, but overall I think you would be fine. Hawaii would be ok, too.

    I don’t know about Australia though.

    I totally recommend you do it. Traveling alone was the best thing I ever did for myself. You have to step outside of your comfort zone and meet new people. You also learn how to trust yourself.

    It’s an awesome experience!

    Just do it, you’ll be fine (alone or whatever), just watch your self . Like the other girl said when you’re staying in hostels you always meet a bunch of new people. In fact I was just in Amsterdam 3 weeks ago and ended up finding a bunch of people I had met in Prague at another hostel. It’s real fun and dont pass up a good opportunity like that over a couple fears! Fear is F.alse E.vidence A.ppearing R.eal.. lol Good luck and have fun!

    Yes you can stay in female only rooms. You will meet people whom you can travel with.
