Expedia and Travelocity have deals where if you buy airfare and hotel through them you get a discount.
All of the islands are nice and worth seeing. However, if you are on a tight budget you will probably end up on Oahu (which is perfectly fine) unless you live in a city (mostly on the west coast) that has a direct flight to one of the other islands.
What I’d do is go to tripdavisor to find the cheapest hotel you can find / tolerate, then kayak to find the cheapest flight then go to expedia and travelocity to see if they can beat that price with a package deal.

The cheapest times of year to come to Hawaii is when kids are IN school, so to come at the end of December, during the holidays will be the most expensive time of year to come here. You have to be flexible on your days of travel to come during a time in which it is the least expensive. If you travel on the holiday, like the 4th of July, it is less expensive than traveling before or after the holiday. Go to travelocity.com and hover your mouse on flights and then select low fare alert. Put in your city of departure and honolulu. It will give you the list of lowest fares then you can select dates within their perameters and it will tell you what your fare is. If your dates are not flexible, I would try to arrange your flights to Hawaii while kids are in school as I mentioned before. All the hotels in waikiki are going to cost you because it’s in the center of tourism. You can try some of the other hotels further away and just rent a car. You’ll want to drive around and see the island anyway. If you plan to fly to other islands, they are all worth seeing. Kauai seems to be the most favorite because it’s just beautiful and not too many people. Oahu is the most commercial but has lots of history with Pearl Harbor, which is a must see. Also, bring lots of money for food, it’s super expensive here. I’d advise getting a hotel room with a refridgerator so you can buy bread, lunch meat, and mayo and eat sandwiches for lunch. That’ll save you some money on food, because I’m serious, food is expensive. I hope that helps.

One Sunday on the Travel Channel all the shows were Hawaii related. I have since the channel do this several times. After watching all day Sunday we picked the island of Oahu to go to. It has the most tourist activities to do. Such as Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, North Shore, Dole Pineapple Plantation, etc. My husband is not the type of person to just sit on a beach for 9 days so I picked Oahu.
Now that we have been to Hawaii we plan to visit all the islands. We are planning for Maui in 2010! And I can’t wait; once you go you will be hooked to!
A good website is
Good luck and have a wonderful stay in paradise!

i went a couplw years ago…
big island was unbelievable, that would be my choice…also, avoid “island hopping”..its much easier to stick to one island and explore it completely as opposed to constantly hooping and travelling..
this is the guidebook i used go to your local barnes and noble or borders and see for yourself
also, i didnt think the hotel +air packages are that great..i did better booking each on my own..look on craigslist under vacation rentals, many people rent out their timeshares for a fraction of what a hotel costs–worth looking into… even look on ebay–some people put their timeshares on ebay(i won a week on Kona for $167 for the whole week–no one else bid, most hotels wanted that for one night

I’ve taken a Hawaii tour before that includes hotels and inter Island plane tickets. Meals are not included except for special tours.
Take a look:
I recommend taking the 4 Day Hawaii Tour Package, Best Deal:

Loow season (for prices) is Sept-Dec avoiding holidays and the month of May. Weather wise it’s pretty much ideal year round. That being said, the most expensive time to travel to Hawaii is from Dec 15-Jan 10th. Rates are very high for holiday travel.
There are some deals out there, but they are limited. If you want to go I would look now since after Thanksgiving everyone wants to plan a trip away for the holidays.
The cheapest island to visit is the island of Oahu. It has the most sight seeing, and variety of food. The most popular island to visit is Maui. Maui has the best beaches! Either one of those would be great for a first time visitor.
Oahu still has many wholesale Air + Hotel deals available. The issue is trying to find a great airfare price with a discounted hotel special.

On December 27th of this year, my husband, myself and my 4 kids will be going to Hawaii. Hilo to be exact.
We will be staying at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa for a week. We planned this, along with every other vacation we’ve been on by using expedia.ca. No, it’s not just a commercial or a money grabber, we really love it. It’s simple easy, and we find better deals and we find it less hectic then going to an agency and what not.
We planned a “special activity” for every day, such as snorkeling, swimming with the dolphins, parasailing and a glass bottom dinner/cruise for every day of our stay. This hotel is 5 stars, all inclusive AND we’ll be staying in an ocean front room.. and you might be thinking that we spent LOADS of money! WRONG. For the 6 of us, with all of these activities included; we spent less then $25, 000! Now you’re probably going with a smaller crowd, and wont be scheduling so many activities, so you should get by really cheap!
Good luck, you wont regret it! Have a great time in Hawaii whenever you choose to go!
